The weather suddenly turned on us this weekend. Today's high was 57 (compared to last week's 80's). I got to wear my sweet jacket and the awesomest gloves ever, but I have to say, jacket season on a bike is not really all that fun. As you ride the wind whips past you so you can't NOT wear a jacket or you'd freeze. On the other hand, riding starts to heat up the core of your body so you get hot even though you're actually also cold. It kinda sucks. I expect the weather to yo-yo a few more times before the cold weather really kicks in - enough time for me to get used to wearing socks and close-toed shoes again.
I must have looked like such a freshman on campus today, hauling around a guitar on my back, carrying my huge astronomy book around. Along with my purse, notebook, and a pizza box I was having a really hard time getting around with only two arms... Despite the fact that I don't really need a shoulder bag this semester, I think I'm going to get one just so those 5 minutes between classes is less frustrating.
Mad Mad Monday
Who?
I wasn't really sure what to play for you guys this evening. There was stuff I want to post, but I just didn't feel like any of it tonight. So instead of that, this is something I only recently discovered. People have been posting old radio dramas and comedy shows online as podcasts, and finding and listening to these has been the highlight of my weekend. I used to borrow old Abbott and Costello tapes from my local library, but they mostly consisted of their most famous segments, not the entire 30 min broadcasts. Even next to contemporary comedians, Abbott and Costello are still one of my favorite comedy acts.
Their most famous segment is probably 'Who's on First," but while most people get the reference, it's really worth checking out the original bit if you've never heard it.
Abbott and Costello - Who's on First
Abbott and Costello repeat gags and re-use their most popular segments throughout the course of their radio and film careers. For that reason the bit really stands on it's own well. But if you want to hear it with surrounding context, you can download one of their full length programs here. In this one, Joe DiMaggio sends Lou Costello a letter asking him to sub for him on the New York Yankees as he recovers from foot surgery. It's worth checking out, as is the rest of the podcast.
