Yesterday at work, about an hour after I got there, there was a sudden "ffzt" noise. All the lights and computers blinked off, resetting everyone's computers. While everyone was muttering and logging in again, someone who had been outside on break walked in and asked "Did you guys hear that noise outside?" Apparently there had been some really loud pop as a transformer on a nearby power line blew. The rest of the building was completely without power, and only our department was spared. Lucky us.
Then about 20 min later, another "ffzt" noise and all our IP phones turned off. The internet of course went with them, and since we all work on remote desktops, work was pretty much over for the day. After about half an hour of waiting for word from the power company, they told us it would be several hours so we all just left.
One of the visiting managers said the surge might have been cause by lightning. Despite no signs of rain at all, there had been some stormy dry lightning off in the distance surrounding Provo. Provo is as muggy and humid as all get out this week, and it still hasn't rained yet. There are drops here or there, but no downpour. It's been pretty awful. Still, it's better than 100 degrees of dry air and direct sunny rays which was what the weather was like last week.
Gosh I can't wait for fall.
By the way, the day trip to Lagoon on Saturday was AWESOME. Amusement parks are the coolest places ever because roller coasters and carnival rides are the greatest things ever. We actually covered pretty much the entire park, even including dilly-dallying and delays, so that's one thing Lagoon has over Cedar Point. Of course, Cedar Point has several things over Lagoon. And by over I mean taller. And by taller I mean the roller coasters. Lagoon's tallest was 110 ft. It was fast and pretty dang fun, but nigh incomparable to the 160 ft Mean Streak or 310 ft Millennium Force.
