Pu-tha-go-ras Su-witch-u

Oi. Today was... a day. And I'm still alive. Hooray - let's hope I can keep this up for the time being. I don't care if I have any responsibilities today - I'm going to spend the rest of the evening playing video games and watching anime. Maybe I'll go buy terrible junk food and complete the unholy trifecta.

2 + 2 = Monday
That's mathematics!

I've never been particularly challenged by math, and I respect it to a certain point of difficulty. I've pretty much avoided taking any math in college (and will graduate without anything post-pre-calc. Bwahahaha!) There is something very satisfying in the enclosed world of a math problem, which I suppose is where my love of logic stems from. Yet math in and of itself is not that much fun. And when teachers try their hardest to convince you that advanced math is useful in the real world, I'm pretty sure they're just full of it. Who uses calc? Rocket scientists, computer programmers, and Calc teachers. There are the obvious uses of arithmetic, geometry and algebra though, so today is dedicated to the importance of math. But mostly because songs about math are funny.

Tom Lehrer-That's Mathematics! - Tom Lehrer is a man full of intelligence, satire, and music. His songs continue to be funny even after being dated several decades. Back in the day he held lectures about various subjects, during which he would insert these songs where relevant. There are a couple of albums out of his work. These two featured songs of his are far from his best, but still very fun.

Tom Lehrer-New Math - The "new math" movement referenced here began in the 1960's.. and ended in the 1960's for obvious reasons.

Animaniacs-Multiplication - Many Animaniac songs are obvious homages to some of Lehrer's work. His Elements song is likely at least partial inspiration for all the "list" songs that came out of this series (Countries of the World, US Cities and their Capitals, Every Word in the English Dictionary, etc). "Buy a calculator - you can multiply too!"

My little brother found this one. Mmm... Algorithms. I totally would have watched a series like Pythagoras Switch if I'd had one growing up. Maybe then we'd all have a greater appreciation for this stuff. I call for a localization of Pythagoras Switch as soon as possible!

Man. That Pythagoras Switch thing was bloody awesome.

Haha, it just cracks me up that they threw ninjas in there. I mean, seriously! Ninjas? And algorithims? But somehow, they pulled it off.

Haha, that's true, we did have Square One. I guess I did watch a math/technical centered show as a child after all.
